A platter of Oreo monsters and bats.

Not too scary but oh so delicious, Halloween Oreo balls are as much fun to make as they are to eat. Monsters or bats you choose!  An EASY Oreo truffle recipe with just 3 ingredients that isn’t just for the kids, adults will enjoy eating them too!

A platter of monster Oreo truffles

Taylor wanted to make some Halloween treats to take to work and she didn’t want to take Halloween Bark, so we decided to go with a classic oreo dessert and made this Halloween Oreo balls recipe. This is such an easy, no bake, recipe that has been around for years.  You can also use this recipe to make turkey truffles for Thanksgiving.

Why you’ll love Halloween Oreo Balls

    • Just 3 ingredients to prepare a tasty treat for the holidays!
    • You can make the balls a day ahead and decorate the next
    • Great family activity and it doesn’t have to be just for one holiday – they’re versatile
    • You don’t have to be good at cake decorating or be ultra crafty to make these Halloween truffles.
    • No bake desserts simplify everything! You don’t have to heat up the oven, you’re cook time goes way down and these can be eaten with your fingers!

    Halloween Oreo Truffles Ingredients

    • Oreos – you need the original, not double stuffed.
    • Cream cheese – that you combine withe crushed Oreos in a food processor.
    • Milk chocolate or white chocolate wafers – this isn’t the recipe to substitute candy wafers with. You’ll appreciate how much easier the chocolate will cover your truffles and how they’ll be smooth without effort.
    Oreo truffles decorated as bats

We decided to make our Halloween treats into bats and monsters using both milk chocolate and white chocolate. I wanted to make green and purple monsters so I thought I would give candy melts a try. After trying them on a few balls, I threw them in the trash. They are so difficult to work with and I don’t like the taste. Instead I just added food coloring to white chocolate wafers and I had beautifully smooth balls to decorate.

I was able to find regular eyes at the grocery but ordered the larger colored ones. If you have extra regular eye balls, save them for your Thanksgiving turkey truffles.

I made the Oreo truffle recipe the day before and they were all ready for us to decorate when Taylor came over.  It reminded me of decorating cookies when the girls were little. We had sprinkles and chocolate all over the kitchen.

How to make Halloween Oreo Balls

    Step 1

Take an entire package of regular Oreos, not double stuffed, and process in a food processor. Add cream cheese and process until well combined.

If you don’t have a food processor, put the Oreos in a resealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin or wine bottle. Then use a hand mixer to combine the cream cheese or use your hands.

    Step 2

Use a small ice cream scoop to form into balls. If using a 1 ½ tablespoon scoop you will get about 22 balls.

    Step 3

Freeze for 15 minutes or refrigerate for 30 minutes or longer before dipping in chocolate.

If you freeze for longer than 15 minutes, let them warm up a bit or the chocolate will set immediately when you dip them.

    Step 4

Melt chocolate in the microwave at medium power, stirring every 15 seconds until melted.

    Step 5

Set a ball on the top of a fork and lower it into the chocolate to cover, let the excess chocolate run off the ball and using a sharp knife, slide it off he top of the fork.

    Step 6

Decorate immediately before the chocolate hardens.

Pro tip: You can prepare the oreo balls ahead of time. This will help you focus on helping little hands if you’re making this dessert with kiddos or friends. Place them in a container in the fridge until you are ready to dip in chocolate.

How to decorate Oreo Truffles Halloween Bats

We started out making bats using thin Oreos for the wings.  These were really simple and I love the way they turned out.  However, when you have two artists in the kitchen, “plain Jane” bats got a little boring. Soon the bats had monster eyes and sprinkles for hair and then double wings.  Once the creative juices got rolling we started with the monsters.

Take a thin Oreo and cut it in half with a knife. Place one on each side of the dipped ball before the chocolate hardens and press them into the ball. Press eyeballs into the soft chocolate.

How to decorate Halloween Truffles Oreo Monsters

If you want to make different colored monsters, use white chocolate and food coloring. I found the gel food coloring gives a more vibrant color. Place one large eye ball on the dipped Oreo ball and add sprinkles for hair while the chocolate is still soft.

Tips to dip balls into melted chocolate

    • Use just a small amount of chocolate in a microwave bowl, enough to dip about five balls. The chocolate cools quickly and five is about all I can dip before it gets too cool.
    • Use a fork to lower and remove the dipped balls from the chocolate and a sharp knife to slide it off the fork onto parchment paper.
    • Decorate before the chocolate hardens, you won’t have much time.
    • Cover any holes with sprinkles, no one will ever know if they aren’t perfect.
    • If the chocolate is not going on smooth, add a little bit of vegetable oil to the chocolate or place it back in the microwave.

This can be a kid friendly activity but an adult will probably need to dip the Oreo balls. If you like decorating, you’ll have fun making Sprinkle Cookies with Christmas trees and don’t forget turkey truffles for Thanksgiving.

If you’re not a chocolate fan, then make pumpkin cheesecake balls instead of Oreo balls. Another Fall favorite are frosted pumpkin cookies.

    Storing Halloween Oreo Treats

You can store Halloween Oreo treats at room temperature but the chocolate will get sticky if it is warm. It’s best to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to serve.

    Should I refrigerate Oreo balls?

Since Oreo balls have cream cheese in them, they should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container.

How long will Oreo balls last?

Oreo balls will last about two weeks in the fridge and up to three months in the freezer.

    Eyeball Oreo Truffles FAQs

Can you make Oreo truffles without a food processor?

It’s a bit more work but easy to do. You will need to crush the Oreos. Place them in an airtight plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin, wine bottle or hard bound book. If you have a hand mixer, use that to combine with cream cheese and if not use your hands. The softer the cream cheese the easier to combine.

Do you need to take out the filling in the Oreos?

No, you don’t need to remove the filling, crush the entire cookie, filling and all.

Is it okay to freeze Oreo balls?

You can freeze these before dipping, just make sure you let them warm up before dipping or the chocolate will set immediately.

What’s the best chocolate to use for dipping?

Milk or semi-sweet chocolate wafers or white chocolate wafers. I find that it goes on smooth and tastes great.

    Can Oreo balls be shipped?

Oreo balls will not ship well because they are dipped in chocolate which will melt when it gets warm. If you want to try it, I would freeze them first and ship overnight.

Why are my Oreo balls falling apart?

To keep the Oreo balls from falling apart, freeze them before dipping them in chocolate. The cream cheese will be firm and hold them together.

How do you crush Oreos by hand?

To crush Oreos by hand, place them in a resealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin or wine bottle.
