No sauce to make in this cheesy baked spaghetti pie casserole. Just boil the pasta and dump everything into an iron skillet (or baking dish) and it bakes into a cheesy mac and cheese like side dish that cuts into beautiful pie slices. Pie for dinner, I’ll take that!

    Spaghetti Pie Casserole for Dinner

This Spaghetti Pie casserole has a custard like texture from eggs and cheese that are combined with thin spaghetti pasta without any meat or red sauce. Just cheesy pasta that is baked in a skillet so it cuts just like a pie. Topped with a golden brown, buttery, cheesy crust, it’s an easy and simple pasta casserole you can prep in just a few minutes that everyone will love.

I don’t think it’s a secret that I love mac and cheese, whether it’s pimento mac and cheese, mac and cheese with cream, creamy bechamel mac and cheese, crock pot mac and cheese or baked mac and cheese. One thing they all have in common is a gooey creamy sauce.❤️

However, there are times, when a creamy sauce is not what you’re looking for in a side dish. That’s when you’ll want to try this skillet spaghetti pie casserole. It’s similar to mac and cheese in that it has pasta and cheese, but instead of a rich heavy sauce, this just has eggs and milk.

When baked, the eggs hold everything together so that you can cut it into perfectly formed slices that will keep their shape when served. This is great when you’re serving a dish with a sauce like steak au poivre or braised short ribs and you want a side other than a potato dish.

Spaghetti pie gets its name from the type of pasta, there’s no beef or marinara sauce in this fabulous pasta dish. It’s a go-to side dish to add to a simple weeknight dinner but is just the thing for when you’re having friends over. You can prep it ahead in 15 minutes and just pop it in the oven before dinner.

How are you going to serve spaghetti pie

You can serve this as a main course, no one will miss the meat when they bite into the cheesy pasta. More often than not, I make it on rotisserie chicken night or with grilled pork chops. If I’m having friends over, it goes great with a pork tenderloin recipe or with lemon chicken or almost any main course.

You’ll Love This Easy Casserole Recipe

      • Easy Preparation – The recipe is so simple to make, no complicated recipe here.
      • Goes with anything- It’s not as rich as mac and cheese so it’s a side dish that will go with anything you’re serving
      • Versatile – It can double as dinner for meatless Mondays or as a side dish.

      Baked Spaghetti Pie Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients to make a spaghetti pie.
      Gather the ingredients.
      • Thin spaghetti – such as capellini, vermicelli or regular spaghetti will work as well, but I like the texture of a thinner spaghetti pasta for this recipe. You’ll need one pound or 16 ounces.
      • Dry mustard – Don’t skip the dry mustard. Found in the spice aisle of your grocery store, it’s going to add a savory flavor.
      • Hot sauce – Just a bit of your favorite hot sauce gives the dish a subtle kick without making it spicy. You can make it spicier by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or leave it out all together.
      • Sharp cheddar cheese – For best results, grate a block of cheese by hand. You’ll need 5 cups total. I like sharp cheddar because of its robust flavor. Good substitutions are Colby Jack and Monterey Jack.
      • Pantry Staples – Eggs, whole milk, butter (cut into pieces), salt and black pepper.

How To Make Easy Skillet Mac and Cheese

      Step 1: Cook the spaghetti.

Cook the spaghetti noodles in a pot of salted, boiling water according to the package directions. Remove it from the heat when it’s al dente.

      Step 3: Make the sauce.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until they’re slightly beaten. Add in the milk, dry mustard, and hot sauce, and whisk again. Finally, add the drained pasta to the milk and cheese mixture along with 4 cups of grated cheese (reserve 1 cup of cheese for the topping).

Add cooked spaghetti noodles to the egg mixture.
Cheese added to a bowl of spaghetti pie.
      Add the cheese.

Step 4: Assemble the spaghetti pie

Pour the pasta mixture into the skillet and top with some butter. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the entire dish and add another tablespoon of butter to the top of the cheese.

Place in an iron skillet and dot with butter.

      Step 5: Bake.

Set the skillet in the oven and bake for 35 minutes or until it is bubbly and the top is golden brown. Serve and enjoy!

Tips for Making Perfect Spaghetti Pie

      • If you don’t want to cook this in an iron skillet, you can use a 9 x 13 baking dish.
      • Don’t overcook the casserole or the top will get very crunchy.
      • Serve right away or remove from the skillet until ready to serve as it will continue to cook in the cast-iron and become dry.

How to Store Skillet Mac and Cheese

In the fridge: You can store your leftover spaghetti pie in the fridge. Just remove the pie from the skillet and let it come to room temperature. Store in an airtight container for about 3 days.

In the freezer: If you want to freeze your leftovers (or your whole pie!), remove it from the skillet and wrap the entire pie in a few layers of plastic wrap then place in an airtight container or Ziploc. It will be good for 2-3 months.

How to reheat: The microwave is great for reheating individual slices, but reheat slowly so the pasta doesn’t dry out. Just sprinkle some water on the top first. You can also cover it in aluminum foil and reheat it in the oven. 350°F for 10 minutes should do it.

Can I make this in a pie pan?

I would not advise using a standard 9 inch pie pan for spaghetti pie. This is a hearty recipe and the pasta will fill a 10-inch skillet. If you want, you can bake a spaghetti pie in a 9×13-inch baking dish instead.
