Basic ingredients, fantastic flavor, and easy to make, it doesn’t get better than this homemade Cornbread Hamburger Pie. A hint of spice from chili powder and a deliciously savory cornbread topping turn this savory beef meat pie into a decadent meal the whole family will love. It’s a delicious comfort food recipe that will keep you warm, satisfied, and happy all through the colder months.

Ground Beef Pie Made So Much Better

Savory ground beef topped with the lightest cornbread are the makings for a savory pie made in heaven. So simple to put together, but full of flavor. It’s a quick and easy meal you can prep in 20 minutes on a busy weeknight.

It’s still summer in the South, but we’re having “fake fall” with temperatures in the 60’s which makes me want warm and comforting meals perfect for autumn and winter. This delicious hamburger pie is one of those recipes that has been on the back of my mind, so I finally decided to make it a reality.

Less like a pot pie and more like a shepherd’s pie, this casserole doesn’t have a bottom crust or mashed potatoes on top, but it does have a delicious and savory cornbread topping. It’s basically like having a beef stew and fresh cornbread, but all in one bite!

You can easily get creative with this recipe. It can be made in a pie pan, baking dish, or large skillet. A cast iron skillet works great because it’ll help form the corn meal crust and turn the edges golden brown and crispy but a large pie pan or baking dish works well also. If beef’s not your thing, you can swap it for ground turkey. If you love the sweetness from sloppy joes, you can change out the filling and make a sloppy joe pie.

Something this hearty and satisfying chould be served with a fresh side like this green beans and new potatoes salad. Its honey vinaigrette is just sweet and bright enough to counterbalance the heaviness of this dish.

Ingredients For Ground Hamburger Pie with Cornbread

An assortment of baking ingredients is arranged on a grey surface. Items include a bag of flour, a bag of cornmeal, a carton of buttermilk, a container of baking powder, a can of sweet corn for that perfect hamburger pie, Crisco canola oil, an egg, and a bag of granulated sugar.
    For the cornbread topping.
A collection of ingredients is laid out on a light blue surface, perfect for making a delicious hamburger pie. They include a whole onion, a bulb of garlic, a green bell pepper, two jars of spices (oregano and chili powder), a wrapped package of ground beef, and a block of Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese.
    For the cheesy, meaty filling.

    FILLING:

Meat: I prefer 85% mix of ground beef to add more flavor, but you can use a leaner version.

Produce: Fresh onion, bell pepper, and garlic cloves flavor the meat pie filling. You can use any color of onion or bell pepper you like.

Spices: Chili powder and oregano are the bulk of the seasoning, with salt and pepper added to taste.

Cheddar Cheese: Freshly grated cheddar cheese gives this savory pie a wonderful finish.

    TOPPING:

Yellow Corn Meal: This corn meal has a beautiful color and mellow sweet corn flavor, I prefer a medium ground cornmeal.

Buttermilk: Tangy and creamy, buttermilk is a wonderful balance to the mellow sweetness of the corn meal.

Creamed Corn: I love adding creamed corn to cornbread for extra texture and flavor.

Pantry Staples: flour, baking powder and an egg.

How To Make Cornbread Hamburger Pie

    Step One: Cook Beef

A metal skillet on a stovetop contains raw ground meat, chopped onions, and chopped green bell peppers, arranged separately but close to each other—perfect for beginning a hearty hamburger pie. The background is a blue-gray surface.
Add beef, onions, and peppers to the pan.
A black skillet on a blue-gray surface contains cooked ground beef mixed with diced green bell peppers and onions, reminiscent of a deconstructed hamburger pie. A wooden spoon rests in the skillet, partially covering a small pile of minced garlic.
    Cook for 10 minutes.

Add ground beef, onion, and green pepper to a skillet and cook over medium-high heat until the hamburger is browned and the green peppers have softened. Then add some garlic. You can drain off any grease at this point.

    Step Two: Sprinkle Spices

A cast-iron skillet is filled with cooked ground beef, chopped onions, and green bell peppers, reminiscent of a hearty hamburger pie. Various spices, including paprika, black pepper, and other herbs, are sprinkled on top. A wooden spoon rests in the skillet, ready to mix the ingredients.
    Add spices.
A large, decorative bowl filled with cooked ground beef mixed with finely chopped green bell peppers and onions resembles a deconstructed hamburger pie. The bowl, adorned with a floral pattern, rests elegantly on a textured blue surface.
Layer beef in a baking dish.
A round ceramic baking dish with floral patterns is filled with shredded cheese evenly sprinkled over a layer of ground meat, crafting the perfect hamburger pie. The dish has two light pink handles and is placed on a blue textured surface.
    Cover with cheese.

Remove from the heat and add some seasonings and place it in the bottom of a baking dish, then sprinkle half of the cheese on top.

    Step Three: Make Some Cornbread

Whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. In a smaller bowl, use a fork to mix the buttermilk with the egg, then add the oil, creamed corn, and remaining cheese. Mix with a fork to combine.

    Whisk dry ingredients.
    Mix wet ingredients.

    Step Four: Assemble and Bake

Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until just combined. Spread the batter over the top of the ground beef mixture and bake.

    Combine wet and dry mixtures.
    Layer over beef mixture.

How To Store Ground Beef Pie with Cornbread

In The Fridge: Let it cool completely before refrigerating in an airtight container. It will keep for up to three days!  You can also freeze it. To reheat, let it come to room temperature and place in the oven at 350º for about 5 minutes until is warm throughout.
