Comeback Sauce is a creamy Southern dipping sauce made with mayonnaise, chili sauce, lemon juice, and a few pantry spices. It mixes together in minutes but tastes even better after it chills for a bit. Tangy, savory, and just a little smoky, it’s the kind of sauce that ends up on everything from fries and fried okra to burgers and shrimp.

A black bowl of creamy dipping sauce sits on a dark textured surface, with sauce spilling slightly over the edge. Crispy, golden fried pickles are scattered around the bowl.

The Southern Sauce That Goes on Just About Everything

Southern Comeback Sauce comes together with ingredients most folks already have on hand, and all it takes is a quick whisk to pull it together. The lemon juice, Worcestershire, and hot sauce give it a lift so it never feels flat or too heavy.

Letting it rest in the fridge makes a difference. An hour is enough for the flavors to settle in and for the onion and garlic to soften so they blend right into the sauce. The result is smoother and a little more rounded than when it’s first mixed. It kind of looks like Thousand Island dressing but it’s not sweet like a Southern white bbq sauce, althought they are used on the same type of food. It’s very much a savory sauce.

A hand dips a crispy fried pickle slice into a bowl of creamy, orange-colored sauce, with more fried pickles and sauce drips on a decorative black tray.

Around here, Mississippi comeback sauce is often served with anything fried, like crispy okra, fried pickles, French fries, onion rings, you name it. It’s also good with grilled kabobs or any type of fried seafood, and it makes a solid burger sauce when you want something with a little tang. The paprika and mustard give it a smokiness that goes with almost anything, but around here it’s a staple for fried food.

Try it out on foods that you would typically serve with ranch dressing.

A Quick Rundown of the Sauce Fixings

This creamy, savory dipping sauce comes together with everyday ingredients you likely already have. You can find the full recipe card with all the details just below.

Assorted ingredients on a gray surface, including mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce, an onion, garlic, canola oil, a lemon, hot sauce, powdered mustard, and a tin of Spanish paprika.

Sometimes the best sauces are the simplest ones. This comeback sauce is made from scratch with ingredients you probably already have in the fridge, and it takes just a few minutes to whisk together. Let it chill for a bit and you’ll have a creamy, tangy sauce that tastes like you fussed over it a lot longer than you did.

Whisking This Southern Sauce Into Shape

    Step One: Combine Everything

A glass mixing bowl with a whisk and various reddish and white ingredients, including spices and liquid, ready to be mixed, sits on a blue-gray countertop.
Add mayonnaise, chili sauce, oil, onion, garlic, spices, and sauces to a bowl.
A metal whisk with a wooden handle rests in a glass measuring cup containing a smooth, light brown sauce or batter on a blue surface.
    Whisk until smooth.
