    Davani’s – Greenville, SC

The last time we were in Greenville, we asked our waitress for a recommendation for an Italian restaurant.  There are several around but we had heard that some were just mediocre.  She suggested Davani’s, which was where the locals go.  So when we dropped Natalie off last week, we tried it for dinner.  It’s off the beaten path, but not far from Main Street, too far to walk. It’s on Augusta Road where there are lots of cute shops, but it’s a couple of miles out in a small shopping center. The inside was too dark for photos, but it looks like a family run Italian restaurant.  They were a little short staffed the night we went but our waiter was so apologetic, he gave us free desserts.  We weren’t in a hurry so it was no big deal, kind of like what you expect in Italy.

They had bread with an interesting olive oil/balsamic vinegar mix that was slightly sweet and spicy.  From there we tried a couple of appetizers.  I went with fresh mozzarella and home grown tomatoes with a wonderful balsamic glaze, however the home made ravioli was a close second.  We all went different directions for dinner, and claimed each had chosen the best. From extremely tender veal with flavorful sauces, a classic penne alla vodka, and a special fish dish with a walnut cream sauce, they were flavorful and perfectly prepared. We had plenty of leftovers but with free desserts we had to have a few bites of the chocolate maruquis and bread pudding.

While this restaurant is not convenient if you are staying downtown and want to walk to dinner, it’s worth the five extra minutes it will take to drive.  We all agreed we would go back and give it a second try.
