When in Pinehurst, hopefully you’ll take some time to relax and who doesn’t love a delicious scone to go with your tea or coffee for breakfast or afternoon tea. I find that some purchased scones can be too sweet. I want a little sweetness but nothing overpowering. I discovered PineScones at the Farmers Market in Southern Pines which is held on Saturday mornings from 8 to 12 on the corner of New York and Broad Streets. Along with wonderful fruit and veggies, the owner of PineScones Cafe always has a booth with several varieties of scones. How clever is that name!
I’ve recently joined a group of runners and our starting point is the Post Office right across the street from the Farmers Market, so it’s super convenient to stop by after my run and reward myself with a scone.
She does a great job with the texture of the scone itself, not too dry or crumbly and she always has interesting additions. Natalies’ favorite is chocolate chip and salted caramel toffee. You can also find strawberry and blueberry along with pineapple and macadamia or cranberry almond. Some weeks she has sugar free and she’ll generally have a savory variety with spinach or bacon. They’re also a perfect size, not so large that you can’t eat dinner afterwards.
So while scones are easy to make at home, and I love my Strawberry and Blueberry versions, these come pretty close. If you’re in the area, give them a try.
